Competence 7

Information and communication technologies is important in all organizations, and across all sectors in our society. The way information is conveyed and interpreted by users can have far reaching impact, which makes it imperative that the message that is sent is clear to the user, and is correctly interpreted. Communication is essential amongst all kind of groups, and can be either written, verbal or non-verbal. During the tenure of this course, the university used an interpreter to translate lecture notes from Spanish to English, in order for our English-speaking group to understand. Course information was communicated verbally, and via email to students. This course did not entail learning a third language, or require students to understand texts in a third language. This course helped me to better understand the need to have a good grasp of another language. In our diverse society, it is apparent that an individual who has command of three language is well rounded. In my workplace, communication is done mostly via emails, and smart phones, less frequently. It is therefore very important for each manager to have access to their email, and to respond to the sender in a timely manner. In a health care organization, information and communication can be beneficial in helping caregivers improve the quality of care that is provided, and provide care that is patient centered, based on needs communicated by patients. Information is also communicated to staff verbally in staff meetings, daily huddles and via email. Communication technology used in our modern-day churches will have different appeal amongst the various generational groups. For example, church outreach programs that appeal to the baby boomer’s generation (born between 1946-1964) may not have any impact on the millennials (born between 1980 and 1994). Church members communicate with each other, and directly or indirectly with their pastors. Communication must be effective in order to generate the desired result.
