Competence 9

The completion of my thesis meant that I had to contribute quality time for the preparation of the instrument, administration of the instrument, collecting of data and input in the SPSS program, generating results, compiling findings and making recommendations. Questions for each of the constructs had to be prepared and send to experts for construct validity. During the interval while waiting for the experts to determine the validity of the construct, and for participants to complete the questionnaires, I had to have strategic alternatives with contact individuals and other facilities I could use in the event that my first attempt was unsuccessful. The regression model was also generated as a guide in my research. These processes altogether contributed to the completion of my thesis.

Staff shortage is one challenge that I have to confront on a daily basis, especially in managing an oncology unit where it is difficult to recruit trained and qualified registered nurses who are experienced in administering chemotherapy medications. The contributing factors to staff shortage in this unit is inability to find qualified registered nurses (RN) with the required experience to fill vacant positions, and the frequent absences of other nurses through sick calls or approved time off, which is mandatory for unionized workers. The strategic component of this course increased my understanding of strategic planning, and the importance of having strategic alternatives in the event that there is minimal staff available to provide effective care to the patient load.

Each day, I would check the call out listing, and contact managers from other care line, who may have a RN with certain competency in critical care, who can be floated to assist with non-chemotherapy medications and infusion given to cancer patients. I also email the resource manager frequently, to arrange interviews for potential candidates, as the hiring process is usually a lengthy one. Current RNs often volunteered to stay back to do overtime to complete the patient assignment. Thus, it is important to have strategic plans in place to deal with eventualities.
